AMD launches Bristol Ridge Pro

After launching its desktop Bristol Ridge OEM version early September, AMD is launching a declination "Pro" of its chips Bristol Ridge.

For details on Bristol Ridge, we refer to our previous article. Broadly we simply remember that this is a desktop version of the APU Carrizo, using the Bulldozer / Excavator architecture and engraved in 28nm.

On paper references "Pro" launched are identical to the conventional versions, either in terms of frequencies CPU / GPU or TDP. We therefore find versions 65 and 35 watts. Schedules are also identical, AMD does not seek to cover their tracks, note just that the Pro is placed at the beginning of nomenclature (Pro AMD A12-9800 against AMD A12-9800).



What are the differences ? Note this intriguing enough to the bottom of the presentation of AMD (page 21):

Commercial Grade Quality: Building on AMD exceptional product dependability, manufacturing variability Identifying and sourcing products from AMD PRO wafers with The Highest yields Ensures Fewer defective parts Commercial-grade and quality for AMD PRO products.

AMD Pro would therefore be learned from wafers with better yields, an unverifiable assertion and difficult to understand. In practice, yields indicate the percentage of functional chips on a wafer. Say that it actually generates less non-functional chips is true, but it is above all an internal problem of AMD qualification! Draw from this a "commercial quality" (he must understand that Bristol Ridge Non Pro come with a quality "non-commercial"?) Is an exercise which only the marketing magic is capable of!

For the remaining differences, AMD highlights the DASH support, the park management protocol. This is especially related to the chipset and network controller. One imagines that the Pro certification by AMD claims a compliant implementation but on this point, AMD unfortunately does not extend.

These chips are reserved to OEMs for their business lines, HP and Lenovo will be the first two to offer PC to the business market using the Bristol Ridge Pro.
