Battlefield 1: beta review

After several hours on the open beta of Battlefield 1, this is our first review hot.

Currently underway for a few days, Battlefield public beta of 1 is certainly a good way to get an idea of ​​the quality of the title, the output of the full version is keyed to October 21 on PC, PS4 and Xbox One. So we played a few hours to see what the new FPS from EA and Dice had in the stomach, especially after a mediocre Star Wars Battlefront. The least we can say is that Battlefield 1 blows hot and cold.

Feelings and events that hit

In this beta, only two modes (classic Rush and Conquest 24 players to 64 players) and a single carte. The latter takes place in the desert of Sinai, and World War forces, mixing tanks, armored vehicles, airplanes, horses, stationary guns, train or snipers. Many snipers. With a large open environment with only a few ruins on the main points and numerous caches in height, this beta has been a paradise for snipers, especially as the rifles of this class are particularly effective.

Speaking class, there are always 4: attack (melee and explosives), support (ammunition and gadgets), nursing (care) and Scout (sniper). There are also elite classes to find on the battlefield: flamethrowers, sentinel and tank destroyer. The tanks are also quite difficult to kill since the tools to eliminate are not very many and we will have to learn to deal with. Here the level uphill helps to promote the played classes and earn points to invest to unlock new weapons and gadgets. There will also be customizing weapons, unfortunately absent from this beta.

At the simple question you need to ask yourself if you're here, namely "do Battlefield 1 is effective? ", The answer is yes. Anyway when everything works, but we'll lower. feet sensations as the lower arms or driving vehicles are genuinely enjoyable, animations (including attacks melee or entry into a vehicle) are really fun, fluid and printing out war as maitrisée in previous games is still there. The explosions do not stop, bullets and the cries fuse, buildings collapse, the planes fly by skimming over the heads ... the atmosphere is just there.

Impossible also not to mention the specifics of this card, namely the horses not easy to master but rather fun, random sandstorm that greatly reduces the viewing distance and heard noises or the armored train that can be used by a team in trouble to sow death and try to reply. Moreover, we appreciate the fact that the parties are fairly short.

Moreover, it is always possible to mark enemies to help his teammates, this feature is logically less effective than in previous games because of the lesser technological advance represented the time. This requires in particular have more eyes ahead on the minimap. This is both a good thing and a bad thing, because once again, to 64 players in particular, seem to see all players run without strategy and discipline like headless chickens is unfortunately still there. more reason to play with friends to give some consistency to action.

A half-tone technology

Let's talk a little more technical. We tested Battlefield 1 in its PC version on a Windows 10 relatively strong configuration based GTX 980, 16 GB RAM and Core i5-4670. By default the game is set to high (so it remains only the ultra setting above) and it rotates vast majority above 60 fps. The optimization is quite significant since the beta and it remains to see if the result will be the same in other environments than the desert.

We also appreciate the many options to adjust his game, starting with fov. Visually, Frostbite engine requires, the game is as beautiful as Star Wars Battlefront and regularly wins the jaw if one omits some texture bugs and strange physical reactions. Just over environmental destruction would also have been nice, but nevermind.

In contrast, the beta will clearly not free of bugs, often very troublesome. In addition to the many problems connecting to servers every day (there obviously were attacks, which did not help too much admittedly, but still), many players have complained of not seeing their weapons (or just the main and nothing else in the inventory) while Sunday a bug in game recovering all players at level 1 ... opening the main menu during game can also generate serious problems and slowdowns game handles the alt-tab in pain. In short, the list is far from exhaustive and approximately 5 game sessions we have played in perfect conditions only 2 times and it is hoped that once the game released key issues will be settled.

Furthermore, we appreciate enormously (!!) on the disappearance PC Battlelog. More plugin to be installed in a web browser to access the menus, everything is happening now in play as it always should have been. It should be noted also the most important links with the Origin platform to interact more quickly with friends and play other games without leaving Battlefield Battlefield 1. The work is clearly underway, but the idea is there.

Battlefield 1: our review of the beta

Due to numerous technical problems encountered during the beta, difficult to recommend the game in the state if Dice does not react quickly. And that's a shame as the feelings are there and very often the action just works. The work on animations and atmosphere WWI was truly pleasant and to put it frankly, we had fun on this beta when working properly.

There remains the thorny issue of purchase. At 60 euros more tens of euros DLC coming, veterans of Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4 may sincerely ask the question of the interest of board at checkout. If this beta gave us the impression of being little more than a simplereskin version of WWI remains to see the interest of the title on the duration with other modes (including the new Operations) of other cards and the single player campaign. In any case the choice of this period seems to be good as the visual and sound execution is successful in this beta, especially in the face of Call of Duty and other Titanfall that will still kick a futuristic conflict seen.
