With the failure of LG G5, it seems that the South Korean manufacturer end the modularity for its smartphones. His successor, G6, would return to a more conventional design. |
To believe the Korean site "ET News", the G6 will not be the worthy successor to the G5, the first modular smartphone LG giant. The South Korean firm does not wish to repeat the experience of the modularity after the commercial failure that the group has had with LG G5.
With the G6, LG abandon modularity
At the show the mobile MWC Barcelona 2016, LG had wanted to stand by revealing the G5, a modular smartphone. The principle is rather appealing, the base unit can accommodate interchangeable modules to add different functionalities to the device. The group presented including a camera module and promised the arrival of other modules, called "LG Friends". However, this innovative device has not found its audience, especially because of high prices for modules.
After the commercial failure of the G5, the mobile arm of LG was restructured in July and the manufacturer has decided that the G6 is not a modular smartphone. The modular design therefore did not even last a year, an admission of failure by the South Korean group, which may make future clients somewhat hesitant to invest in a brand unit.
LG wants to avoid risk-taking
According to the site "ET News," which takes its information from sources close to the industry, LG G6 would be one piece. A change of direction that already checks with the LG V20 released in September. LG is not the only manufacturer to have abandoned modularity, Google has terminated its modular phone project Ara.
Anyway, LG should benefit from the Barcelona MWC to be held in early 2017 to introduce the G6 should forget the failure of its predecessor.
