The GTX 1080/1070/1060 On mobile

After a series of successful launches for its GPU Pascal, Nvidia GeForce GTX accept the 1080, 1070 and 1060 in Mobile, versions similar to their desktops equivalents. A sharp increase compared to the previous generation, which should renew its almost total domination of the portable gaming market.

There is a little less than a year, Nvidia has experienced a different strategy in the mobile world with the launch of a GeForce GTX 980 similar to what is done in the world of desktops graphics cards but mobile format. The test has obviously been validated and this time it is the entire mobile high-end that is modeled on desktops graphics cards.

Traditionally, mobiles had to settle for versions "M", far less swift. For example, Nvidia took advantage of the aura of the GTX 980 desktop to market a GTX 980M considerably lower than a desktop GTX 970. A race for big numbers that appeals to handset manufacturers but which leads to confusion and can fool some buyers.

The deal is however changing. The clear domination of Nvidia allows him to create strong brands around its main variations, the effectiveness of its GPU exploded and gamings laptop manufacturers are less reluctant to intensive graphics cards. It is therefore simpler to propose common references to both worlds, which is a very good thing. For its new high-end mobile, Nvidia has decided to offer similar solutions to the GeForce GTX 1080 GTX GTX 1070 and 1060 desktops, keeping the same name and the same performance potential:



The differences in the specifications are slight. The 1080 GTX and 1060 mobile and desktop are identical in configuration and the first goes to show the same turbo frequency. There against by some differences for the 1070 GTX mobile version take some more processing units to compensate for its slightly lower frequency.

A common point in the specifications of these mobile versions regarding the base frequency is reduced obviously to adapt to greater thermal stresses. Because ultimately what are the limits of consumption and temperature (modulated by the fan curve), which will define the performance.

We can assume that the 1080 GTX mobile version benefit from a rather huge TDP configurable between 120 and 180W, depending on the cooling capacity portable. The 1070 GTX mobile will probably be content to +/- 100W when it should be of 80W for the 1060 GTX mobile.



Nvidia believes that performance will average at least 90% of desktops equivalents, which show earnings of +/- 70% compared to the previous generation! Significant gains that match the progress in energy efficiency between generations of GPU Maxwell and Pascal.

Machines will be proposed shortly by Acer, Alienware, Asus, Clevo, EVGA, Gigabyte, HP, Lenovo, MSI, Origin, Razer, Sager and XMG. For this generation, Nvidia expects that the use of a G-Sync screen is more frequent and accurate that there will be both versions 1440p and 120 Hz.

These mobile 1000 GTX however, remain compatible with Optimus, or association with Intel iGPU for manufacturers who prefer this approach. There is always the potential gains in terms of autonomy at rest, but it prevents the use of G-Sync. In any case, Nvidia said it had worked with its partners to ensure that all outputs are connected to the GeForce GPU. Even in the case of a solution Optimus, compatibility with the virtual reality helmets should be ensured.

On the software side, Nvidia said it had improved BatteryBoost, its consumption reduction system in battery mode that would allow a gain of 30% compared to the previous generation, probably by acting more aggressively on the frequencies. Furthermore, this method takes advantage of a new smoothing system of the display cadence, like what is done in multi-GPU, to maintain fluidity and superior playability.



Overclocking obviously rest of the game and is identical to what is done on desktop except the possibility of surges which will not be offered. The margin at the frequency and will be similar to 2 GHz will be within the reach of many machines, although in practice the thermal limits of course stabilize at a lower level. It will be possible for manufacturers to offer factory overclocking, but the first machines should be content with the reference frequencies.

Obviously, with these GeForce GTX 1080 GTX 1070 and 1060 GTX mobile versions, Nvidia has a strong offering for high-end machines designed for gamers, a segment that is doing rather well indeed in the middle PC market overall is suffering. And unfortunately for the prices, these solutions Nvidia should remain almost without competition.



Polaris 10 GPU from AMD (Radeon RX 480) is too recessed in energy efficiency to be competitive. Remember, it is somewhat less efficient than a 1060 GTX for consumption by a GTX 1080. It is rather on the entry level or mid-range AMD maintains a playing card with the small Polaris 11. At this level, Nvidia has not released his game and we do not know if another small GPU Pascal will quickly offered or whether it will be from the previous range renaming.
