New USB 3.1 controller Asmedia

MSI announced a new motherboard "gamer" in its range Z170, the Z170A Gaming M6. The press manufacturer is relatively light in detail, and the card is still not registered on its site. The announcement still retains our attention by the presence of a new USB 3.1 controller, the ASM2142 of Asmedia.


According to the statement of MSI, Asmedia have worked with the brand for the development and testing of this new controller.

So far motherboards Z170 incorporated in general ASM1142 (see our motherboard comparison Z170). The latter has the particularity of being connected to the PCIe Gen3 choice x1, x2 or PCIe Gen2. It manages two ports simultaneously and is compatible with UASP.

If the site Asmedia has not been updated, the main novelty of the ASM2142 seems interconnection lines passing two PCIe Gen3, doubling the available bandwidth. Something that could improve performance in theory, we could see during our tests by using both ports simultaneously, the Alpine Ridge from Intel (the other USB 3.1 controller that is found on some card models mothers) is capable of exceeding the bandwidth of a single link PCIe Gen3.

For the rest the controller continues to operate two ports simultaneously. Not until the availability of the card, or to update the site Asmedia for more, but the arrival of an affordable controller - this is usually the positioning of Asmedia - using two lines PCIe Gen3 should be good for the next batches of upcoming motherboards.
