Smartwatch shipments fall for the first time

According to IDC, shipments of smartwatches fell for the first time since they began tracking this type of devices.
In Q2 2016, a total of 3.5 million smartwatches were shipped worldwide. This represents a significant 32% decline in shipments compared to the same quarter in 2015.
The brand that was hit hardest was Apple, which saw shipments drop a staggering 55%. It shipped 1.6 million Apple Watches in Q2 2016. A year ago, it shipped over 3.6 million.
Despite this piece of bad news, Apple was still the runaway leader in this segment. Its shipment of 1.6 million Apple Watches meant that Apple accounted for 47% of all smartwatch shipments in Q2 2016.

Coming up in a distant second was Samsung with 600,000 units shipped, accounting for 16% of all shipments this quarter.
This represented an improvement of 51% over the same quarter last year where Samsung only shipped 400,000 units - presumably thanks to the new Gear S2 which has been received favorably by critics and consumers.
In third, fourth and fifth were Lenovo, LG and Garmin respectively.
Smartwatches were thought to be one of the few bright spots in an otherwise gloomy tech industry, but this latest piece of news sheds a different light.
Consumers, it seems, are still hesitant about smartwatches and it remains to be seen if smartwatches can take off a big way.
