As expected, not to leave too long the field to AMD and Radeon RX 460, Nvidia is about to complete the family of GeForce 10 with two new entry-level references: the 1050 GTX and GTX Ti 1050.
While the very low end tends to disappear, or to be content with very old references, there is still an important market for cheap graphics cards but sufficient to run recent games, albeit with some compromise on graphics options . Without being a priority, this is probably not the most profitable segment, Nvidia could obviously not ignore it and developed a fifth Pascal GPU: the GP107.
The GP107 is a small chip that is content to 768 calculation units and a 128-bit memory bus, which represents approximately 60% of the GP106 that equips GeForce GTX GPU 1060. It differs from all other members of the Pascal family at manufacturing process. As for the larger chips Nvidia opted for the 16nm its traditional partner, Taiwanese TSMC, the GP107 is manufactured in 14nm by Samsung. The same technology operated by GlobalFoundries to manufacture Polaris GPU from AMD.
It will be interesting to observe the ability to increase the frequency of GP107, other Pascal chips being very talented at this level while the reference frequencies are relatively low for the 1050 GTX and GTX 1050 Ti. It is the same for the energy efficiency which could be different. Use two foundries for the production of a family of GPU is not current. We do not know exactly what prompted Nvidia chose this path but we can imagine limited allocations at TSMC, or lower costs more suitable for entry Samsung.
To recall, Nvidia offers two levels of GP106 specifications in the GeForce GTX 1060, the more muscular being reserved for the version 6 GB while the rated version takes place in version 3 GB. For the GP107, both versions will also be offered but this time under two separate references, which will avoid any confusion: GTX 1050 and GTX 1050 Ti.
These two new GeForce merely a TDP of 75W, achieved with a small drop in GPU clock for the GTX 1050 Ti. This is similar to the Radeon RX 460, at least on paper. In practice the Radeon RX 460 available rather consume hundreds of watts. As for the new GeForce, you will observe that the partners decide to do at the overclocking margin and to maintain a high turbo frequency.
Some cards will be based on designs without power connector, which means that the 75W consumption limit will correspond well with certain graphics cards, Nvidia management system being rather strict on compliance with consumption limits. Others will appeal against by a 6-pin connector to allow more margin. Note that if a reference card has been developed by Nvidia, with a design similar to that of other GeForce 10 but much shorter, marketing is not provided.
In terms of performance, we expect that the 1050 GTX is placed at the RX 460, while the GTX 1050 Ti should be a little more efficient. Nvidia talks about his side of a gain of a little over 50% over the GTX 750 Ti and performance tripled compared to a GTX 650.
Sign that Nvidia does not intend to let AMD take too much market share, the pricing of these new GeForce relatively aggressive. € 125 for the GTX 1050 2 GB and 155 € for the GTX 1050 Ti 4GB tests are planned for the October 25, which also corresponds to the release date of the 1050 GTX Ti, while the GTX 1050 will arrive on November 8 in 2GB version. It is not impossible that some partners offer a 4GB version thereafter.
